Mighty Lands Petromin

Just received the announcement that Mighty Distributing has signed a strategic alliance with Petromin, the Saudi company that operates more than 150 lube shops in Saudi Arabia. From the press release:

MIGHTY WINS COVETED CONTRACT WITH SAUDI ARABIA

NORCROSS, GA –President and CEO of Mighty Distributing System of America (Mighty Auto Parts), Ken Voelker and VP of Product Management, Brad Bradshaw have returned from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with a Master Distributorship Agreement signed by the giant Petromin Corporation headquartered there. The new strategic alliance effectively makes Petromin Mighty’s distributor in select countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The 10-year agreement covers the exclusive distribution of Mighty branded and Petromin-Mighty co-branded products in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and Southern Sudan.

“Petromin is a bourgeoning enterprise of market-leading lubricant brands in this part of the world,” says Voelker. “The addition of automotive service products as a complement for Petromin’s more than 5,000 automotive service facilities is consistent with the direction of the leading lubricant distributors here in the United States. This is the perfect fit for helping them to meet their aggressive growth objectives.”

Since January 2011, Mighty has been providing automotive products (oil filters, air filters, cabin air filters, wiper blades and select chemicals) for Petromin’s quick service chain, Petromin Express, comprised of 155 locations throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with distribution hubs in Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. It is the largest quick service chain in the world outside the United States.

“Our sales volume figures for Petromin Express have been quite impressive,” according to Petromin Executive VP, Sajid Saeed. “Mighty has skillfully positioned Petromin to build sales in many other markets.” Mighty services historically include inventory controls, sales and technical training, marketing tools, electronic cataloging and trouble-shooting, tech tips, and consumer education materials.

Samir Nawar, President and CEO of Petromin Corporation, and principal signatory, explained, “The agreement with Mighty represents a solid foundation for a lasting relationship with significant long term potential for both companies – not only in Saudi Arabia but far beyond.”

The Petromin Express chain is managed by quick service industry veteran, Jim Harrington, who previously held management positions at Valvoline Instant Oil Change and Victory Lane. Harrington commented, “Having used the Mighty system in the States, I was familiar with the unique benefits for quick service operations. For example, the ease of use with Mighty’s fuel system cleaning products was a big plus when we introduced this service to that part of the world. We have plans to roll out several additional services using Mighty products and programs as Saudi consumers are quickly catching on to America’s appreciation for the importance of automotive maintenance.”

Industry Vendor Merger

Just learned that industry vendor Bosch (maker of filters, spark plugs, wipers and other goodies) will acquire industry vendor SPX (manufacturer of tools and service machines like ATF exchange equipment) in a cash deal worth $1.15 billion. (And don't we all wish we had that much cash on us!) You can read about the deal here, or read the press release below:

The Bosch Automotive Aftermarket division plans to acquire the Service Solutions business of SPX Corporation, headquartered in Charlotte, NC. An agreement to this effect was signed in New York City on January 23, 2012. SPX Service Solutions develops, manufactures and sells diagnostic and service tools, workshop equipment, and software for the global automotive aftermarket. For 2011, the business, which is based in Warren, MI, is expected to generate sales of approximately 920 million dollars (660 million euros). It employs some 2,700 associates in 17 countries, primarily in the U.S., Germany, France, and China. This makes the planned acquisition the largest in the history of the Automotive Aftermarket division. The transaction is subject to normal closing conditions and regulatory approvals, and is expected to close during the first half of 2012. The purchase price amounts to 1.15 billion dollars (roughly 883 million euros).

"Acquiring SPX Service Solutions will help make Bosch one of the leading providers of diagnostic solutions," said Robert Hanser, president of the Automotive Aftermarket division. "The acquisition will allow us to considerably expand our market presence in the diagnostics business, particularly in North America. In addition, we will strengthen our position in Asia Pacificand Europe, especially in our diagnostics business with automakers."

The product portfolio of SPX Service Solutions includes vehicle repair solutions, including diagnostic tools and software, as well as special repair service tools. In addition, SPX offers technical information, training programs, equipment for dealerships and repair shops, and services for automaker's service organizations. These products are also used in automakers' authorized dealerships and repair shops. This acquisition will make Bosch a comprehensive provider of solutions for such operations. The products and services of SPX can be found in many different applications, such as passenger cars, heavy-duty trucks, light commercial vehicles, agricultural machinery, and off-highway applications.

David Kowalski, SPX segment president said, "We are proud that we transformed Service Solutions from a domestic hard tool manufacturer into a global supplier of diagnostic solutions, hard tools and repair information services. Bosch is dedicated to the automotive service sector and has strong relationships with vehicle original equipment manufacturers worldwide. We think Service Solutions is a very good strategic fit with Bosch."

Fast lube industry computer vendor has relaunched their website. You can see the new and improved version at: www.ints.com

Big Acquisition

We're hearing from a couple of sources that Henley Enterprises, the major Valvoline Instant Oil Change franchisee owned by Don Smith (our 2004 Operator of the Year) has purchased the entire 74-store EZ Lube chain from its equity owner, Goldman Sachs. This would give Henley a major presence on the West Coast and if, as expected, the EZ Lube stores are converted to VIOCs, would add quite a large stable of facilities to the nation's second-largest fast lube franchise network.

Plus, we also hear that in addition to the EZ Lube purchase, Henley Enterprises has purchased a fellow VIOC franchisee with more than 30 stores in the San Diego market. Obviously a big shakeup in the lube market, and we'll have more on this story as it develops.

Berlin Oil) and Stephen Eldred, the chief financial officer of Windward. Fuel Economy Regs

Trying to Rebuild

Interesting article about the efforts of one Express Oil Change to rebuild after last spring's tornado in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. That's right, months after the disaster business owners are still trying to cut through mounds of red tape in order to rebuild what they already had. Gives new meaning to the old phrase, "I'm from the government and I'm here to help." Getting out of the way would be a start!

Synthetic-Blend Dexos

Word on the street is that Castrol has reformulated its Syntec Blend (synthetic blend) motor oil to meet Dexos specifications. If true, this would mark the first instance of a branded motor oil meeting GM's stringent specs without resorting to a full-synthetic product. Initial reports are that the new product will not significantly differ in price from current Syntec Blend products, which would be great news for lube operators trying hard to meet GM standards while encountering significant resistance from customers not willing to pay for a full synthetic oil change.

We've also heard that Shell's Pennzoil and Quaker State brands are set to launch their own synthetic-blend Dexos products, which would be even more good news for lube operators.

UPDATE: As you might notice from the comments section, Valvoline, too, has a synthetic-blend product that meets Dexos standards. Even better!

2013 Ford Escape

According to a report in Automotive News, when Ford pulls the wraps off its redesigned 2013 Ford Escape later this fall, it will NOT sport the popular V6 engine or the hybrid powerplant. Instead, Ford will offer a trio of four-cylinder engines in the new Escape: a base 2.5L naturally aspirated four-banger and two "EcoBoost" turbocharged engines: a 1.6L making about 175 horsepower and a 2.0L making about 240 horsepower (the same engine is offered in the new Explorer). The 2.0L will replace the 3.0L V6 that has been a popular option with Escape buyers since the model first bowed, and should achieve higher gas mileage than the six, as well.

CAFE Requirements

Funny thing about government mandates: Unless severely enforced, the majority of Americans will do what they want. Take the Corporate Average Fuel Economy requirements, for instance. Sure, automakers meet these stringent (and rising) standards by flooding rental fleets with fuel-efficient vehicles, but what to drivers really buy? According to a new report from Chug, a car market tracker, only one major market in the country is actually exceeding 2011 mileage standards.

To whit: In 2011, the CAFE target is 24.1 mpg. The only market to meet this standard is Palm Springs, CA, where drivers have purchased new cars that average a combined 24.51 mpg. By contrast, the Minot-Bismarck, ND, market has drivers who have purchased new cars averaging a combined 19.03 mpg, or 21 percent below the full standard. You can see more details on the report here, but nationwide drivers are purchasing vehicles with a combined mileage of 22.18 mpg -- which was the target for 2007! And that's with $3/gallon gas. Think what the fuel economy standards would be if gas were cheaper!

Just goes to show you, you can't really mandate market behavior!

Green Earth Adds New API Certification, 5W-20

Green Earth Technologies has added API SM certification and a new motor oil grade, 5W-20, to its lineup of bio-based motor oils. From the press release:

Green Earth Technologies, Inc., a leading manufacturer and marketer of "green" environmentally safer consumer packaged goods and products, announced today that its new formulas for both G-OIL 5W-30 and 5W-20 ultimate biodegradable bio-based full synthetic GREEN motor oils have received API SM certifications. Concurrently, Green Earth Technologies' is finalizing patent applications for these revolutionary formulations. G-OIL is still the world's first and only API certified bio-based motor oil.

"We brought the IP in-house and worked very closely with Infineum to perfect our bio-based base stocks and additives first, before undergoing a whole series of API SN, ILSAC GF-5, ACEA and other certification tests," said Jeffrey Loch, President and CMO of Green Earth Technologies. "At this point, we are incredibly proud of the high performance results of the engine tests…additionally, when brought to market, these two new oils will display the USDA Bio-preferred logo on the labels for easy recognition by consumers as well as Federal agencies and representatives."

Bio-based products are those composed wholly or significantly of agricultural ingredients – renewable plant, animal, marine or forestry materials. The USDA Bio-preferred logo indicates that a product has been independently certified to meet the program standards for bio-based content. Bio-based products can help increase US energy independence by reducing the use of petroleum in manufactured products. They may also reduce the introduction of fossil carbon into the atmosphere, thus mitigating potential climate change impacts.

The new reformulated G-OIL 5W-20 and 5W-30 bio-based full synthetic motor oil is expected to go into production this fall and will be priced the same as the current G-OIL 5W-30, which retails between $6.43 and $7.99 per quart.

Used Car Market Set to Blow Up?

Interesting article in Automotive News today about the used car market. Essentially, the new-car market died in 2008 after the banking collapse, which means fewer used cars and off-lease cars on the market today. A LOT fewer. It will be interesting to see what affect this has on the lube business as these used cars start to hit their prime age for being serviced at quick lubes.

Jiffy Lube Approves Nitrogen

Learned recently that Jiffy Lube is approving nitrogen tire inflation as part of its core service offerings. This means that, starting in December, Jiffy Lube franchisees will be free to add nitrogen tire inflation to their service menu.

In the last two years, Jiffy Lube has approved many "non-traditional" services, including:
• Power steering fluid exchange
• Transfer case fluid additives
• Floot mat cleaning
• Power steering fluid additives
• Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) service
• Air conditioning additives (though not refrigerant top off, or "quick shot" or "booster" products
• Cabin air sanitizing service
• Gas cap replacement
• Antifreeze/coolant additives
• Radiator hose replacement
• Transmission fluid additives (though not transmission flush chemicals)
• Support strut (hood, hatchback) replacement
• Differential fluid additives
• High intensity discharge (HID) bulb replacement

Much like the rest of the industry, Jiffy Lube appears to be pushing higher sales through additional service offerings.

Interesting article from Discovery about Canada's tar sands and the controversy surrounding them. While I'll admit that tar sands aren't the cleanest form of energy in the world, what people who oppose this project conveniently forget is that if the United States does not build a pipeline to capture this important source of oil, the Chinese WILL! China has already proposed building a multi-billion-dollar pipeline across the Canadian Rockies to get oil to Canadian Pacific ports, where it could be shipped overseas. So you see, whether or not people agree with whether this oil should be harvested is moot. It WILL BE! And it will either help the U.S. economy…or China's. Wonder what protesters think about that?

The Future of Gas Engines

Very interesting article from Automotive News (subscription required) about the future of gasoline engines. It all boils down to the fact that even the very high mileage standards proposed by the Obama administration can and will be met by a fleet comprised mostly of vehicles powered by internal combustion engines. In fact, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle sales are expected to comprise less than 5 percent of the new-vehicle fleet by the end of this decade, small potatoes compared to the rest of the vehicle fleet.

Walmart Loves Castrol's e-Packs

Hot off the press wire is this item about Walmart's relationship with Castrol. Walmart Tire & Lube Express facilities first began testing Castrol's Enviro-Pack (e-Pack, for short) "bag-in-box" dispensing units in 2008. Now it seems more Tire & Lube Express facilities will use the novel dispensing system, many even forgoing bulk oil tanks. From the press release:

Castrol…has partnered with Walmart Tire and Lube Express to revolutionize how oil change facilities are built and operated with its Castrol Enviro-Pack (e-Pack) and e-Dispense system. Instead of putting in costly bulk tanks that turn inventory slowly, the new prototype shop for Walmart Tire and Lube Express has a smaller footprint and solely runs on Castrol's e-Dispense and e-Pack. For smaller volume premium fluids, oil changes are performed by manually dispensing out of the e-Packs instead of using costly plastic bottles, reducing the amount of plastic being placed into landfills.

"Our partnership with Castrol and investment in the e-Pack product for our Tire and Lube Express business addresses a dual business objective – greater operational efficiency and a focus on more environmentally friendly packaging, " said Scott McCarter, Senior Director of Walmart Tire and Lube Express operations. "Our work with Castrol is unique in our space and has revolutionized how we purchase and utilize oil. Replacing more costly bulk tanks with e-Packs and e-Dispense units will have a substantive benefit for our business by reducing construction costs and improving inventory management."

The new oil change facilities build on the work that Castrol and Walmart have done on e-packs since 2008. The e-Pack packaging, a poly bag inside corrugated carton, is more environmentally friendly than quart bottles, which allows for more than 85 percent reduction in discarded plastic. As a result of businesses such as Walmart switching to Castrol's e-Pack and phasing out more traditional plastic quart bottles, Castrol reached a tremendous milestone with over 2 million pounds of plastic saved from entering the waste stream. The volume of bottles that were eliminated from the waste stream could fill approximately eight Olympic-sized pools.

In recognition of the environmental benefits and strengthening partnership between both companies, Castrol recently became a co-recipient of Walmart's Vendor of the Year Award for Sustainability. Walmart operates 2,500 Tire and Lube Express facilities in the United States and through their partnership with Castrol, it has eliminated approximately one million quarts of oil waste. Castrol's e-Pack reduces 86 percent of residual oil left in packaging versus the original quart packaging. The added benefit is that the cardboard e-Pack packaging is recyclable.

ConocoPhillips to Spin Off Downstream Business

The ConocoPhillips board of directors voted last week to separate its downstream refining and marketing divisions (including lubricants) from its upstream exploration and production divisions. The upstream portion of the company will retain the ConocoPhillips name and headquarters. The company has not yet announced what the knew company will be called or where it will be headquartered, though the company does expect to have the spin-off completed by mid-2012.

Currently, ConocoPhillips markets lubricants under the 76, Conoco, Kendall and Phillips 66 brands. No word on whether the new company will continue to do so or attempt to consolidate under a new brand identity (Kendall perhaps?).

Automakers Get Mileage Concession on Trucks

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal (subscription required), the Obama administration is considering giving a concession to automakers regarding future mileage targets for large trucks and SUVs, which make up a sizable percentage of domestic automakers' sales. The report suggests that the government may allow truck mileage to increase by only 3.5 percent by year, as opposed to the proposed 5.0 percent increase mandated for car mileage.

We love it that many of the fine operators in the fast lube industry are ardent supporters of their communities, and we love getting notice of campaigns like the one recently conducted by Fred Saraiva, Jr., one of our Lube Talk forum members and owner of Sierra Lube Express in Yuba City, California. He recently raised $2,500 in five hours by hosting a car show at his shop. He reports that 100 percent of the money went to help Yuba City High School's FFA program. Not only did the event draw 85 cars, but it also literally raised car count, as since the event he reports car counts are up 3.8 cars per day. Way to go, Fred.

SAE and automakers are working on formulations as low as SAE 5 (a 0W-5, anyone?) and here's betting, what with automakers struggling to eke out gas mileage from every nook and cranny of an engine, that we'll see something like a 0W-10 on the market by 2020 or so.

Automakers to EPA: We Don't Like E15

According to published reports, Chrysler, Toyota and GM recently sent letters to the U.S. EPA criticizing that group's decision to allow fuel retailers to market E15, a mixture of 15 percent ethanol and 85 percent gasoline. While most fuel marketers already sell E10 (10 percent ethanol, 90 percent gasoline), the stronger alcohol concentration of E15 could void manufacturer warranties, the automakers warn.

The EPA ruled recently that E15 may be used in cars dating back to 2001 models. Retailers who wish to market the fuel (here's betting there won't be many) must use an orange and black label to denote the mixture.

Dealership Profits

According to an article in Automotive News (subscription required), dealership profits are the highest they've been in nearly a quarter-century — despite the fact that dealers are losing money on new-car sales! The report noted that dealerships posted a pre-tax profit of 2.1 percent, all of which was derived from used-vehicle sales and service/parts operations. On average, dealers see a net loss of $180 on each new vehicle sold. Interesting reading.

Mazda Launches Prepaid Maintenance Program

Mazda recently announced the launch of a "Mazda Total Advantage" plan that will allow consumers to prepay for dealer-performed maintenance, saving up to 20 percent for service in the process. The plan will apply to customers who purchase a new or certified used 2007 or later Mazda vehicle. Customers can select increments of one or five years.

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) is launching an all-new added value to customers of new, used and certified pre-owned Mazda vehicles. The Mazda Total Advantage (MTA) is a new pre-paid scheduled maintenance program, the first from Mazda, developed with the customer in mind.

The pre-paid service program benefits customer and adds value to their vehicle purchase by lowering scheduled maintenance costs. By offering a savings over purchasing maintenance services individually, the factory-certified maintenance raises the bar over available aftermarket maintenance programs.

MTA is available in one-to-five-year increments on both Schedule I and Schedule II maintenance plans. Available to all new, used and certified pre-owned Mazda customers of 2007 model year vehicles and newer, the program also ensures customers are receiving the best care for their cars with a full-circle service inspection at each maintenance visit. In addition, customers can finance the new MTA program into their vehicle purchase through Mazda Capital Services.

According to Automotive News, only half of Mazda customers have their vehicles serviced at dealerships.

Jiffy Lube Father's Day Survey

Just in time for Father's Day, Jiffy Lube has released a survey about father's and driving. Some of the findings:

• 40 percent of people share fond memories of their father teaching them about maintenance or car care. (To be honest, that's surprisingly low IMHO.)

• 69 percent of people said their father taught them the importance of getting regular oil changes. (Wish that were higher.)

• 54 percent said their father taught them to use the proper grade of oil.

• 54 percent said their father taught them to check their tires' air pressure.

• 60 percent said teaching kids about proper vehicle maintenance is one of the most practical lessons a father can give.

Report: 2020 Mileage Targets Achievable

Ran across this story that cites a Boston Consulting report, which indicates that automakers should be able to meet 2020 mileage targets (fleet-wide average of 40-plus mpg) using existing technology for internal combustion engines. Expect to see more turbocharging, direct-injection, variable-valve technology etc. Also expect to see more accessories like power steering and perhaps even A/C compressors powered by electricity rather than parasitically driven by the serpentine belt.

Still, that's good news for the lube industry, and indicates that the good-ole IC engine will still be around for decades to come.

Northup to Man Helm at AWDA

Those in the industry with long memories may remember Larry Northup, the former executive director of the Convenient Automotive Services Institute, a one-time fast lube industry trade group. Well, he was recently named executive director of the Automotive Warehouse Distributors Association. From the press release:

The Automotive Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA), a segment of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) has named Larry Northup as its executive director. Since 2004, Northup has served as AWDA’s staff liaison.

“The AWDA board felt that the new title was more appropriate for an organization that represents more than 200 of North America’s top warehouse distributors, as well as hundreds of their suppliers,” said AWDA chairman David Segal, Automotive Supply Associates. “Larry’s new title is a reflection of AWDA’s position within the industry, as well as the staff leadership Larry has provided over the past seven years. The board wanted to recognize that service.”

“I am extremely proud to be named AWDA’s executive director,” Northup said. “The association has an incredibly rich history of service to its members and I’m pleased to have earned the confidence of such a significant organization.”

In addition to his duties managing AWDA, Northup serves as AAIA’s senior director, member relations, overseeing the association’s membership retention and recruitment efforts. Over a 32-year career in the association field, Northup has managed numerous trade groups, including several in the aftermarket industry.

Tri-Cities Fast Lubes

Ran across this interesting press release from Tri-Cities Fast Lubes, a Jiffy Lube franchisee that filed for bankruptcy in January. Appears they're trying to follow the Heartland Automotive Services model and force Shell/Pennzoil's hand a little. It'll be interesting to see Shell's reaction considering Tri-Cities has 16 shops and Heartland Automotive had 400-plus shops at the time of their bankruptcy.

From the press release:

As previously reported, Tri-Cities Fast Lubes, Inc., one of the nation's larger Jiffy Lube franchisees with 16 quick-oil change stores in the North West, commenced Chapter 11 proceedings in January 2011for the purpose of restructuring its financial affairs and resolving financial differences with its franchisor and major oil supplier.

Since the commencement of the Chapter 11 case, the business has continued to operate in the ordinary course with no interruptions of any kind. "While the decision to file for Chapter 11 was not an easy one, we ultimately felt it was the best course of action to protect our business while we work toward a resolution of our financial issues with Jiffy Lube International and Pennzoil," said Sean Porcher, TCFL's CEO. "While we have been working diligently towards and would prefer to find a solution that would permit us to continue as part of the Jiffy Lube network, we refuse to compromise the recoveries of our stakeholders and employees to do so."

Dating back to early 2010, the company has been unable to reach agreement on the differences that exist with both Jiffy Lube International and Pennzoil, Shell Oil. "Our franchisor and oil supplier continue to place overly burdensome demands upon us that will continue to cripple our business for decades to come," explained Mr. Porcher. Today the company takes its first step in separation from Pennzoil by announcing plans to reject their oil supply contract dating back to 2008. While Pennzoil is a leading brand in the motor oil market, the premium installers pay for the brand quickly erodes their bottom line cash flow. Pennzoil often provides upfront capital to fund business start-up in return for long term purchase agreements. Once under purchase agreement, companies like TCFL are obligated to purchase exclusively from Pennzoil regardless of price increases or competitive fluctuations. "The rejection of this supply agreement will provide us the flexibility to explore agreements with competing brands. We are currently fielding offers from other major oil suppliers and franchisors who are interested in forging a strategic partnership with us to grow the quick oil change business in the North West," explained Mr. Porcher.

For Tri-Cities Fast Lubes, Inc. to emerge from Chapter 11 as anticipated, they need to show a long-term viable business plan. While the company remains hopeful that the plan can be built around their foundation as a Jiffy Lube franchisee and Pennzoil products customer, Porcher noted: "our number one priority is making TCFL successful for years to come. I have spent over half of my life in the Jiffy Lube system, but we are really at a crossroads here. If other oil companies and franchisors are willing to forge an alliance with us and provide us upfront capital to help fund our emergence from Chapter 11, we will have no choice other than to seriously consider those offers."

While the company has made no announcement regarding lease rejections, Porcher noted that their deadline is quickly approaching for assumption or rejection of leases. The company is currently making contingency plans regarding lease rejections if their differences cannot be resolved with Shell.

TCFL is owned and operated by Sean Porcher and Rudd McClory. Both graduated from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo with Master's Degrees in Business Administration. The pair acquired the company in 2008 from Allan Englemeyer and Jamie Hall who continue to advise the company on various business matters. The company operates sixteen Jiffy Lube Centers in Eastern Washington – including Spokane, Tri-Cities and Hermiston, OR.

Jobbers World has an interesting article out comparing retail (that is, purchased in quart bottles at a big-box retailer) motor oil prices now versus one year ago. The survey found that retail prices for conventional motor oil have increased by 11 percent, while the retail price for high-mileage motor oil has increased by an average of 8.8 percent. Meanwhile, the retail price for synthetic motor oil has only increased 5.9 percent. As I said, very interesting.

Quaker State just launched a new rewards program that will pay consumers for keeping their cars. From the press release:

The makers of Quaker State, the motor oil well known for providing durable protection, are now giving motorists cash for using Quaker State and making their cars last. The Quaker State Cash Back Bonus Program launches today and is designed to reward consumers who use Quaker State Ultimate Durability full synthetic motor oil, Quaker State Enhanced Durability synthetic blend motor oil or Quaker State Higher Mileage Engine motor oil with the cash value of their vehicle when they reach 300,000 miles, subject to certain terms and conditions.

The Quaker State Cash Back Bonus program is being released in conjunction with the updated Quaker State Lubrication Limited Warranty program, one of the easiest to use, longest running and most comprehensive motor oil warranties available to motorists. The new Quaker State Lubrication Limited Warranty is one of the first lubricant manufacturer programs that follows the vehicle makers' recommended oil drain intervals.

“For over 20 years now, the Quaker State Lubrication Limited Warranty has been one of the best motor oil warranty programs on the market. The tradition of being among the industry’s most innovative motor oil brands continues with the recent changes to the warranty program,” said Chris Hayek, Quaker State Global Brand Manager. “People are keeping their vehicles longer to maximize the value of what may be their second largest investment, and the Cash Back Bonus is being introduced to provide a bonus to them for reaching 300,000 miles with the help of Quaker State specialty motor oil.”

To qualify, consumers’ vehicles must have been manufactured within the last 72 months and have driven 75,000 miles or less at the time of enrollment. Qualifying consumers can enroll in the Quaker State Lubrication Limited Warranty program atwww.quakerstate.com.

To be eligible for the Cash Back Bonus, consumers must be eligible for and participate in the Quaker State Lubrication Limited Warranty program and use one of the Quaker State specialty motor oil products in the vehicle starting no later than the 100,000-mile mark. Interesting bit of news from Fram. The company will launch a series of training videos aimed partially at lube technicians. The kicker is, everyone who signs up to watch the videos gets entered into a prize drawing!

Fram…is gearing up to launch an interactive, online training program designed for counterpersons, professional technicians and wholesale distributors.

The 2011 Fram Challenge includes a three-part video training series created and moderated by Honeywell CPG technical trainers, Fram engineers and engine experts. The Challenge runs from June 1 to August 31 and outlines different key aspects of oil filtration.

After registering at www.framchallenge.com, automotive professionals will gain access to one new training video each month of the challenge. The videos cover: oil filter anatomy; filtration and engineering testing and cartridge filters; and service bulletins and extended oil changes.

Participants who complete all three modules will receive a customized Certificate of Completion. For every video completed, participants will be entered into a random drawing for a chance to win one of the five $1,000-value American Express-branded reward cars. Just received word that ACDelco is expanding its product line by offering Mobil products, including Mobil 1 motor oil products. (Not surprising, given that we understand Mobil makes the "synthetic blend" that ACDelco markets as its dexos motor oil.) From the press release:
